What Is CBD?

CBD, which is short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound known as a cannabinoid which is sourced from the cannabis sativa plant. There are over 100 different cannabinoids found within the plant, with THC being another more well known cannabinoid. Contrary to popular misconception, CBD is legal within the UK and does not cause users to experience a high. Instead, it is the THC within the cannabis plant which causes cannabis users to experience a high. CBD is usually derived from the hemp variety of the plant, as the hemp plant contains large amounts of CBD and small amounts of THC. This is important as CBD products must contain less than 0.2% THC content in order to remain legal within the UK. The potential health benefits of CBD are yet to be fully understood as research into it is still in its early phases. No claims can therefore be made and CBD products must be sold as food supplements.

How Is CBD Oil Made?

To put it simply, cannabidiol oil is made by extracting CBD from the hemp plant and diluting it with a carrier oil. The hemp plant is used for CBD extract as the hemp plant contains large amounts of CBD and has a low THC content. CBD is extracted using one of three extraction methods. The most common and highest quality method of extraction is co2 extraction. This method involves passing co2 through the raw hemp plant matter, which removes almost all trace of THC. As a result, it creates the purest form of CBD. A second method can be to use a solvent such as alcohol in order to leave just the cannabinoids from the plant. This is not as clean as the co2 method as some of the solvent can be left within the extract. Finally, a third method is to use olive or coconut oil, which involves steeping the hemp within the oil. However, this method often leaves a weaker product as it is inefficient. Once extracted, the CBD extract is then diluted with a carrier oil such as hemp oil, coconut oil or MCT oil in order to create what we know as CBD oil. This step in the process allows the manufacturer to choose the strength of the oil. The CBD is then bottled into the final product that we see online and on shelves today.

What Is The Difference Between CBD Oil & CBD Tincture?

Although CBD oil and CBD tincture are often used to describe the same thing, they are in-fact different. CBD oil contains an oil base, whereas CBD tincture uses an alcohol base. They do have similarities however in that they provide similar benefits and can both be consumed sublingually.

Is CBD Oil The Best Method of Consumption?

Using CBD oil is one of the most common and effective methods of consumption that is suitable for both new and the more experienced users, but it isn't necessarily the best method of consumption. Depending on what you want to achieve with CBD, the best method of consumption for you will differ. If you need a quick release of CBD throughout the day then vaping CBD may be a better option for you, but if you need CBD to target a certain problem area then you may be better off choosing a topical CBD. Perhaps if you don't want a change to your normal daily routine then CBD oil capsules will be the best product for you. CBD capsules allow you to take CBD just like you would other tablets.

What Are The Benefits of CBD Oil?

Using CBD oils is the most common way to take CBD, and so understandably there are a whole host of benefits. When taken sublingually, a benefit of using CBD oil is that it offers a far quicker way to feel the effects than other methods. The CBD oil is absorbed through the blood vessels beneath the tongue which allows it to get into the bloodstream quicker than many other methods. Using CBD oil is often preferred by beginners as you don’t need to invest in a CBD vape kit or any other specialist equipment.

How Do I Take CBD Oil?

CBD oil is very simple to take. Typically it is absorbed into the body sublingually. The user is to apply a couple of drops of the oil underneath the tongue where it is held there for up to to 90 seconds. The CBD enters the bloodstream through blood vessels beneath the tongue where it can then get to work. Some people choose to use CBD oil spray as they find it easier to apply it beneath the tongue. You can also take CBD oil by mixing it with an array of different foods and drinks.

How Many Drops of CBD Oil Should I Take?

The optimal amount of CBD oil drops to take will differ from person to person. We would recommend that new users stick to a small dose of CBD, whilst more experienced users can look to take a greater amount. Each product will have its recommended number of drops, however when starting to use CBD you should roughly take around 10-20mg of CBD a day. You will need to work out how many drops this is using the size of the dropper and the concentration of your product. You can then increase this amount slowly should it be needed.

How Long Do The Effects of CBD Oil Drops Last?

When using CBD oil sublingually the effects should roughly last between 4-6 hours. However, this may vary depending on a number of factors such as how much you have taken and the concentration, as well as your weight, height and gender.

When Should I Take CBD Oil Drops?

There is not an optimal time of day that you should take CBD oil drops. This is largely down to personal preference and will require some testing to see what time of day works best for you. We would however suggest taking CBD oil drops just after eating rather than on an empty stomach. This increases the chance of having the highest bioavailability.

Can I Rub CBD Oil On My Skin?

We would not recommend rubbing CBD oil on your skin as CBD oil is designed to be consumed sublingually or ingested. If you want to use CBD oil on a certain part of your skin or body then we would recommend using CBD topicals. A CBD topical is any CBD lotion or cream that can be applied to the skin. This allows CBD to work in a certain problem area.

How Long Should I Hold CBD Oil Under My Tongue?

When consumed sublingually, CBD oil drops should be held under the tongue for around 90 seconds. The CBD oil is then absorbed into the bloodstream via the blood vessels that are found beneath the tongue.

What Is A Carrier Oil?

A carrier oil, as the name suggests, is an oil which is used to carry CBD. Some of the carrier oils used on our products include olive oil, hemp seed oil, MCT oil and coconut oil. The main reason for using a carrier oil is because it provides a greater bioavailability, meaning it helps the body to absorb a greater amount of of CBD. CBD is a fat soluble rather than a water soluble, which means it dissolves in fat but not in water. The body better absorbs fat solubles when they are mixed with fat, and so CBD is mixed with a carrier oil to benefit bioavailability. Additionally, CBD is far easier measured and dosed when it's in an oil as opposed to in CBD isolate form. The carrier oils can also provide added benefits alongside CBD, for example olive oil has health benefits for the heart.

Is Vegan CBD Oil Available?

Yes, we do have some vegan CBD oil products available. CBD extract itself is vegan, however the carrier oil used with the CBD will determine whether the CBD oil product is vegan. Some companies may use some animal products within the carrier oil and so we would always recommend checking the label or packaging of the product to determine if it's vegan friendly.

What Is The Difference Between Hemp Oil & CBD Oil?

Whilst some people often wrongly use the terms interchangeably, there is a difference between hemp oil and CBD oil. The main difference is that hemp oil does not contain any CBD. Hemp oil comes from the seeds of the hemp plant whilst CBD is extracted from the stalks, leaves and flowers of the plant. Hemp seed oil is often used as a carrier oil for CBD as it can help towards providing the entourage effect.

What Does CBD Oil Taste Like?

One of the most common questions for those new to CBD is around what it tastes like, with many having heard complaints about it being unpleasant. Not all cannabidiol oil products taste the same as the taste can vary depending on the kind of extract as well as the carrier oil it is diluted with. However, the taste of CBD oil can be described as being grassy, or earth-like. The taste of full spectrum CBD oil will likely be a lot stronger as it contains a greater range of natural cannabinoids. The concentration of the oil also plays a part, as the higher the concentration the stronger the taste. If you don't like the taste then there are options available. Firstly, you can buy flavoured CBD oil, but you can also mix CBD oil with your favourite foods or drinks to mask the taste.

Is Flavoured CBD Oil Available?

Yes, flavoured CBD oils are available if you do not like the natural taste of CBD. They are not as common, but we do have some flavoured options in our store such as orange, lemon, mint, apple, cherry and lavender.

What Are Terpenes?

Terpenes exist in many plants, but in the cannabis plant they are the natural compounds found within the flower or bud. They're said to contribute towards the entourage effect which many users of CBD refer to.

Will CBD Oil Get Me High?

No, CBD oil will not get you high. All of our CBD products contain less than 0.2% THC in order to remain in line with UK laws. THC is the psychoactive substance within the cannabis plant and is responsible for the high sought after by recreational cannabis users. With such little THC you will not experience a high. If you are still concerned about THC we offer a range of zero THC products that can be found on our site.

Will CBD Oil Show On A Drug Test?

Whilst it is unlikely that you will fail a drug test from consuming cannabidiol oil, we cannot guarantee this and its not a simple straight forward answer. A drug test will check for the presence of THC and legally all CBD oil products sold in the UK should contain less than 0.2% THC. Given this is such a small amount, you would need to consume a lot of CBD in order for the THC to be detected. This shows the importance of buying from reputable brands where the product has been lab tested, as this will allow you to know with confidence how much THC is within the product. If you are concerned about the presence of THC and potentially failing a drug test, the best thing to do is choose a broad spectrum CBD oil which will contain zero THC. This will ensure no THC enters your system and you will therefore not fail a drug test.

Is CBD Oil Legal in the UK?

Yes, CBD oil is legal within the UK. All CBD products sold within the UK must contain less than 0.2% THC. THC, otherwise known as Tetrahydrocannabinol, is the psychoactive substance that is responsible for the high feeling provided by cannabis. All of our products meet this guideline and are 100% legal. If you have any further questions about the legality of CBD products then do not hesitate to contact a member of the CBD Planet UK team.

Is CBD Oil Safe?

Yes, CBD oil is perfectly safe. CBD is often closely associated with marijuana which gives it a bad reputation, but some of the negative associations are incorrect. CBD is in-fact legal and does not cause users to experience a high, whilst it is also a non-addictive substance. Whereas within marijuana, THC is the addictive and illegal substance that is responsible for causing a high. To remain legal within the UK, CBD products may only contain up to 0.2% THC, which is nowhere near enough to become addicted to or cause a high. CBD has been classified as safe for human consumption by the World Health Organisation. There have been no recorded serious side effects to date from CBD consumption, although some minor side effects may occur. The minor side effects include symptoms such as diarrhea and drowsiness, although these effects usually only occur if you consume too much CBD. This shows the importance of starting with a low dosage and slowly building your way up over time. It must be stressed that it is important to consult your doctor or a medical professional before you begin using CBD. CBD may not be right for everyone, particularly if you consume prescription medication. The interaction between CBD and certain prescription medications may not be known and so it is important to seek advice first. Pregnant women and women that are breastfeeding should also not consume CBD.

Is CBD Oil Addictive?

No, CBD oil is not addictive and so you can consume it without worrying about becoming addicted. According to the World Health Organisation, evidence suggests that CBD does not have abuse potential. CBD itself is not addictive, but some CBD products may contain up to 0.2% THC, and THC is an addictive substance. However, such a small amount of THC is nowhere near enough to cause users to become addicted. Although CBD is not addictive, stopping using it suddenly could result in some changes to your body such as sleep which you may struggle with.

How Do I Store CBD Oil?

It is important you store CBD oil correctly to keep it's strength and potency. As with other types of oils, CBD oil in sensitive to light and heat, meaning it's best to store it in a dark and dry place. It's also important to keep it in the container it comes in. Usually a CBD oil will come in a dark-coloured container which protects the oil from exposure to air and light. If you are concerned that your CBD oil may have gone off, then you'll be able to tell from its smell, taste and visible appearance. It will smell funky and no longer give off an earth-like scent, whilst it will also appear more thick than previous. Lastly, it'll taste gone off rather than its usual earth-like flavour.

What Is The Entourage Effect?

The entourage effect is the belief that a range of different cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes work together in unison to provide a greater effect than they would each have on their own. For this reason, the entourage effect when using full spectrum CBD oil is said to be more likely as this type of CBD contains a full range of cannabinoids. Broad spectrum products on the other hand do not contain the THC cannabinoid and so the entourage effect is not as likely. With CBD isolate there will not be any entourage effect as is a pure form of CBD which contains no other cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes.

How Does CBD Oil Make You Feel?

It is difficult to describe exactly how CBD oil will make you feel as it effects everyone differently. There are reports it can make you feel more relaxed, but it definitely will not make you feel high like many people wrongly believe.

How Long Does It Take To Feel The Effects of CBD Oil?

How long it takes to feel the effects of CBD oil will largely depend on the method of consumption, as well as how much you consume and other individual factors for the person who is taking it. However, roughly when consuming CBD oil sublingually you will begin to feel the effects within around half an hour. If you choose to ingest CBD oil by taking it with your favourite foods or drinks then you can expect to feel the effects much slower as the CBD has to pass through the digestive system before it takes effect. On average, this method of consumption will take roughly a few hours to feel the effects.

How Long Do The Effects of CBD Oil Last?

How long the effects of CBD oil will last depends on the method of consumption and how much you have consumed, as well as factors relating to the individual. Roughly though, when consumed sublingually the effects of CBD oil will last for around 4 hours. When ingested, the effects of CBD oil will last slightly longer, usually for up to around 6 hours.

What Is The Endocannabinoid System?

The endocannabinoid system is a system within the body for controlling many processes such as appetite, sleep and mood. The receptors are found around the body although it is not yet fully understood how CBD interacts with the receptors. More research is needed in order to fully understand the process.

What Is The Concentration of CBD Oil?

The concentration of CBD oil is important to understand as the stronger the concentration the greater the effects will be. For example, a 10ml bottle of 1000mg CBD oil will be far stronger than a 30ml bottle of 1000mg CBD oil. We have a range of concentrations suitable for both new and experienced CBD users. Our most popular concentrations include:
  • 5% CBD Oil
  • 10% CBD Oil
  • 15% CBD Oil
  • 20% CBD Oil
  • 25% CBD Oil
  • 30% CBD Oil
  • 40% CBD Oil

Can I Cook With CBD Oil?

Yes, CBD oils are great to mix with foods and into your favourite recipes. We recommend starting with a low dosage to begin with until you have worked out the suitable amount for each meal. We’d recommend adding CBD oil to a range of foods such as salad dressings, baking mixtures, butters, and smoothies to name a few. CBD oil can be added to almost any recipes and is only limited by your imagination. The only thing to recommend when adding CBD oil to a recipe is to try and reduce its exposure to direct heat onto the oil as it can cause the carrier oil to separate from the CBD.

Can I Use CBD Oil For Anxiety?

We would not recommend using CBD oil for anxiety. CBD is not designed to help treat, prevent or cure anxiety or any other mental health condition. Should you be experiencing anxiety then we would recommend that you speak with your doctor to work out a potential treatment that works for you, rather than using CBD oil.

Can I Use CBD Oil For Pain?

Research into CBD oil throughout the last few years has only just started to unravel some of its potential health benefits. There have been some promising studies undertaken into the link between CBD and pain, however it is still early stages and so no conclusive claims can be made. Our CBD oils are not designed to treat, cure or prevent any medical conditions which may be causing you pain. You should consult your GP or a healthcare professional if you are experiencing pain.

Can I Use CBD Oil For Sleep?

CBD oil is not designed to help treat or cure any medical conditions that may be hindering your sleep. If you are experiencing any condition which is causing you a lack of sleep then we would recommend you consult with your doctor to find the cause and a potential solution, rather than using CBD oil for sleep.

What Is The Difference Between Full Spectrum & Broad Spectrum CBD Oil?

When selecting the best CBD oil for you it is important to understand the difference between broad and full spectrum CBD oil, as well as the benefits of each type. Full spectrum CBD oil contains the full spectrum of cannabinoids, natural terpenes and flavonoids found within the hemp plant. This means it includes up to 0.2% THC content, but it also contains other cannabinoids such as CBG. This is great for people who want to benefit from the entourage effect. This is the belief that the effects of CBD are stronger when it is combined with other cannabinoids. However, full spectrum products do contain THC and not everyone is comfortable with consuming it. Broad spectrum CBD oil is similar to full spectrum CBD oil in that it contains natural terpenes and flavanoids, but it only contains a broad spectrum of cannabinoids, meaning it doesn't contain THC. This makes them great for people who do not want to consume THC, perhaps because they need to pass a workplace drug test.

What Is The Best CBD Oil Strength For Me?

There is not an optimal strength of CBD oil and it will differ from person to person depending on a number of factors, such as weight, height and gender. It will also differ depending on if you’re a frequent CBD user or more of a new user. If you’re a new user we would recommend a CBD oil with low strength in order to gauge how your body reacts, whereas more experienced users should choose a stronger CBD oil.
